
The Minnesota Institute for Trauma-Informed Education (MITIE) was founded to develop, support, and advance the field of trauma-informed and trauma-engaged education. The Minnesota Institute for Trauma-Informed Education (MITIE) was launched in May 2021 as a joint partnership of the University of St. Thomas School of Education and Morrison Family College of Health. The Institute seeks to provide an arena for scholars, practitioners, and researchers to convene and learn about the latest practices in trauma-informed education. The Institute has 4 main goals:
- Establish a sustainable model for trauma-informed and trauma-engaged education
- Conduct trainings, workshops, webinars, conferences, and seminars to expand the knowledge basis of trauma-informed education
- Create a pipeline of teachers, social workers, and professionals who are knowledgeable about trauma-informed and trauma-engaged education
- Increase the number of schools that adopt trauma-informed approaches

Apply Now for the MITIE Research Fellowship
MITIE Research Fellowship aims to support learning and advancement in understanding the impact of trauma and toxic stress on the educational enterprise, at the individual student, classroom, teacher, administration, or societal level. We invite scholars, practitioners, and health professionals in the education field to submit a proposal for a research project, to be completed over the course of a year on a topic related to trauma-informed practices in education. Selected Fellows will receive ongoing training and development, supervision from leading trauma experts, and a $12,000 stipend award. Learn about our inaugural group of Research Fellows.
We are pleased to announce a second year of Research Fellowship, accepting applications immediately. The application timeline is as follows:
- April 15, 2023: Deadline for application submissions
- June 1, 2023: Announcement of selected Research Fellows
- July 1, 2023: Research Fellowship projects begin, and run through June 30, 2024

Becoming Trauma-Informed: A Primer for Educators
St. Thomas offers a self-guided, online course to provide educators with the tools to identify and help students who face the impacts of trauma.
In this course, you will learn the basic understanding of psychological trauma and its impact in both K-12 and higher education and strategies for intervention. Learners will be able to recognize and respond to signs of traumatic stress and know where to find additional help when necessary.
