Personnel Preparation in Special Education Grant

The University of St. Thomas has received a Personnel Preparation in Special Education Grant from the U.S. Department of Education - Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP).

This grant titled "Trauma-Informed Interdisciplinary Practices (TIIP): Developing early intervention professionals to meet high-intensity needs of children with significant disabilities, from immigrant and refugee communities" helps our university advance the common good by preparing individuals from diverse cultural communities to fill critical shortages in early childhood special education and social work to serve children with disabilities. Participants will receive a scholarship worth a maximum of $10,000 applicable to tuition. Learn more about this groundbreaking grant!

Scholarship FAQs

We are seeking interested candidates to work towards a license in early childhood special education or a master's degree in social work. Candidates must be committed to serve at least two years following completion of the program with diverse individuals with disabilities. Social work students receiving the IBHC training scholarship, funded through HRSA, cannot accept this training scholarship in the same year.


If interested, complete the following 2 steps:

  1. Complete an Interest Survey, which will be screened for consideration for scholarships
  2. Apply for admission into one of the following University of St. Thomas graduate programs:

Note: Only admitted graduate students can be considered for the scholarship.


In this program, participants will participate in the following:

  • Required disciplinary coursework in Early Childhood Special Education or Social Work
  • Professional learning community
  • Interdisciplinary collaborative courses
  • Coordinated early intervention field experiences

Candidates complete 5 interdisciplinary collaborative courses with the following skill outcomes:

  • Effective early intervention identifying disability characteristics in young children to gain access to meaningful and effective early intervention educationally and medically
  • Focusing on social and emotional mental health and family quality of life to support immigrant and refugee families and children
  • Becoming trauma-informed to meet the needs of immigrant and refugee families
  • Addressing behavior from a cultural perspective to provide culturally sustaining practices to support immigrant and refugee families and children
  • Engaging in personal self-care to support the emotional well-being of early childhood professionals

Highly flexible programming that includes both in-person and online learning (synchronous and asynchronous)


Scholars begin each academic session starting Spring 2022 through Summer 2025.
