The mission of the School of Education Graduate Writing Center is to scaffold student success by providing writing support to School of Education students, fueled by the belief that our students should have the tools necessary to be successful in our programs.

Writing Center Schedule

On-campus and remote appointment hours are by appointment only. Please refer to the online scheduling system for specific Writing Center hours, as staff availability may vary. Summer and J-term availability is limited; please schedule early in advance to secure an appointment. Due to this limited availability, only remote (online) appointments are available during summer and J-term.

Appointment Basics:

  • Students are allowed 1 appointment per day, ranging from 60-90 minutes
  • Students will be asked to read their assignment aloud, as this allows the student and consultant to hear more easily any gaps in flow or understanding
  • Writing Consultants can work with a hard or digital copy of the assignment
  • Writing Consultants can cover roughly 6 pages during a 90-minute appointment, depending on the writing level
  • If your paper is more than 8 pages long, you may need to schedule more than one appointment in order to receive comprehensive feedback on your paper

What does it cost to access the Graduate Writing Center services?

All students enrolled in the School of Education are charged $15 per semester for services provided by the Graduate Writing Center.

What happens during an appointment at the Graduate Writing Center?

During your appointment, your writing consultant will work with you to answer the questions you have about your writing. Whether you are looking for answers about APA, grammar, or organization, you will likely be asked to read your paper aloud. This method of working through your paper allows both you and your writing consultant to hear where there may be gaps in flow or understanding. The idea, during appointments at the Graduate Writing Center, is to talk through your ideas and to make sure you are communicating your ideas effectively in your writing.

For how long should I schedule an appointment at the Graduate Writing Center?

Our appointment times range from 60 to 90 minutes. During a 90-minute appointment, we are able to work through roughly 6 pages of writing. It is typically recommended to schedule more time than you think you will need.

Do I have to schedule an appointment to visit the Graduate Writing Center?

Though making an appointment is not required, it is recommended. Clients are welcome to walk-in, but it is not guaranteed the time will be available. Especially during mid-terms and finals, plan on scheduling an appointment to have guaranteed time with a writing consultant.

Can the Graduate Writing Center review a group paper?

Yes. However, it is recommended that each group member be present during the time his/her section of writing is reviewed.

What if I can't come to campus?

Students unable to come to campus have the option of a remote consultation. To schedule a remote appointment, look on the WCOnline scheduler for the consultant named "REMOTE" and schedule an appointment during that time.

With the remote option, you would e-mail your paper to gradwriting@stthomas.edu before your appointment time.

Once your paper is received, a writing consultant will review your paper using “Comments” and “Track Changes” in Microsoft Word. Progress made during your appointment will then be e-mailed back to you. With this option, you are welcome to call at any point before, during, or after your appointment with specific directions or questions, but you are not required to do so.

What if I can't make it to my appointment?

Please call or e-mail to let us know! This will open up the schedule for other students to make appointments. The GWC has an appointment policy: If you do not come to 3 scheduled appointments without calling or e-mailing to cancel, you will no longer be able to schedule appointments in advance and are only eligible for walk-ins for the remainder of the semester.

What is the Graduate Writing Center's Confidentiality Policy?

To encourage free and open communication among writers, the Writing Center will not divulge information about a client’s sessions unless the client asks that a faculty member be informed of his/her time at the Center.

Will my professor know I visited the Graduate Writing Center?

Your professor will only know of your appointment at the GWC if you request that he/she knows. After each appointment, your writing consultant will ask whether you would like an e-mail sent to your professor informing him/her of your appointment. This is your chance to have us send an email. Most professors like to see their students taking the extra initiative to improve their writing.

I think I am already a good writer. What can the Graduate Writing Center do for me?

Take it from us that an extra pair of eyes on an assignment can work wonders. Many students who come in to the Center are fantastic writers. The Graduate Writing Center can provide polish and give feedback where there may be gaps in flow or understanding.

What is not provided by the Graduate Writing Center?

The GWC is not a drop-off site for papers. We do not merely edit but rather aim to work collaboratively with students on their writing. We do not guarantee grades. We are not experts when it comes to Microsoft Word or other word processing programs.
