Cultural Competency for Educators
This PELSB-approved course meets licensure renewal requirements for K-12 educators in Minnesota who need to complete cultural competency training.
Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. It goes beyond awareness and tolerance to include identifying one's own cultural assumptions, values, and beliefs and examining the impact of those beliefs on our interactions with people.

CEUs (Continuing Education Units): 16
Length of Program: 16 hours

Dr. Block is the Founder and Executive Director of the Digital Empowerment Academy and Founding Principal for Sankore Consulting.
Dr. Block has varied experience in the education sector, including working as a Social Studies teacher, a Program Coordinator, a Content Lead for K-12: Social Studies, a Technology Integration Specialist, and a Strategic Project Administrator with Minneapolis Public Schools.
In addition to these roles, Dr. Block is an adjunct professor in the School of Education at the University of St. Thomas, Hamline University Center for Excellence in Urban Teaching, and Metropolitan State University School of Urban Education.
Dr. Lanise Block holds a bachelor's degree in history from Drake University. Additionally, she holds a Master's degree in teaching; three graduate certificates: E-Learning, Learning Technologies, and Online Teaching; and a doctoral degree in Critical Pedagogy from the University of St. Thomas. Dr. Block has publications of her technology integration research and has presented at conferences nationally. Her research interests include digital divide, advocacy, and inclusion.
